Family Resource Center
Internationally renowned entrepreneur Barton G. Weiss and the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine have joined forces to establish the Barton G. Kids Hear Now Cochlear Implant Family Resource Center within the Department of Otolaryngology’s distinguished Ear Institute .
The goal of the Barton G. Kids Hear Now Foundation Cochlear Implant Family Resource Center is to assist hearing-challenged children and their family’s transition from a silent world into a hearing world of sounds and life through the use of cochlear implant technology. The Center places an emphasis on the viability of cochlear implants and the vital auditory verbal therapy as an option for deaf children. Created to help deaf children and their families before and after the patient receives his or her cochlear implants, ongoing support services include:
·Guidance throughout the pre-and post diagnostic phases
·Necessary Speech and Auditory verbal therapy
·Connections to other families with hearing impaired children
·Mentoring to families with implanted children.
·Support in the areas of auditory-verbal training and educational programming
·Financial assistance to families in need
Guided by Dr. Fred F. Telischi, M.E.E, M.D., FACS, professor of otolaryngology, neurological surgery and biomedical engineering and chair of otolaryngology the Center will serve to further the achievements of the Cochlear Implant Program. Led by Dr. Thomas Balkany, Director of the University of Miami Ear Institute, the Cochlear Implant Program has for the past 20 years helped restore hearing to more than 1,000 deaf children and adults. Citing as its mission, “Giving the Gift of Sound” the Foundation will additionally serve as a national resource base for the hearing-challenged and their families.
